Competitive Rowing
Rowers have the option to apply for sprint (summer) season, head race (fall) season or both. The competitive program is specifically geared toward building fast boats for premier regattas (like Master Nationals and Head of the Charles Regatta) and will require a higher level of commitment, accountability, athleticism, coachability and overall boat speed contribution from program rowers. Invitation to join (and remain in) the competitive program will be based upon:
- High level of fitness and technical ability
- Recommendation by the Open Rowing Head coach or Sculling Head Coach, and approval by the Competitive Head Coach.
- Training outside of coached practice on regular basis (3-4 times per week)
- Commitment to attend at least 2 out of 3 coached Competitive practices per week
- Desire to compete in Masters Nationals, Head of the Charles, and/or other premier regattas
- Participation in coached fitness tests (erg, etc.) throughout the season
- Willingness to work hard, respond positively to coaching and support the team

Competitive Rowers...
All Competitive rowers have the opportunity to represent AARC at various regattas in both the summer and fall water seasons.
They also have the opportunity to participate in any Open or Competitive coached practices during the SPRING, while those programs are combined for one season.
Plus Competitive rowers can participate in un-coached Captain's practices and Club Sculling practices (based on head sculling coach approval).
What's a Captains' Practice?
Captains will be elected to coordinate during un-coached practice sessions through all on-water seasons. Captains will relay the coach’s workout plan and make any necessary adjustments to the line-ups. They also will communicate with coxswains and safety launch drivers and make sure that the un-coached practices run safely and smoothly. During the Competitive season (June - October), Open and Competitive rowers will be combined in line-ups during Captain's practices
Advance sign-up for practices
Advance sign-up helps make the most of practice time. It facilitates effective line-ups and avoids the need for rowers to switch in/out of boats and send rowers home. To be assigned a seat in practice, rowers must sign up with their availability by noon, Thursday the week prior. A schedule of daily line-ups will be posted on the club’s website on the home page. It is important to check schedule on website before practice for changes.
Rower-Coxswains
All AARC rowers are expected to contribute to practices by either coxing boats or driving safety launches. Please read the information linked below and remember to take the coxing quiz (located on the home page).
